They are almost certainly done from photoreference and since they a) necessitate the taking of a photograph and b) are almost indistinguishable from a photograph, we have to ask c) why not just take a photograph and frame it, and then spend all that painting time on something more self-expressive? There are well documented techniques for accurately transcribing photos into pencil or paint. All it takes is lots and lots of time and a complete lack of imagination. Ahem. Sorry. Rant over.
