The Japan-based design collective, Tibori, recreate 2D videogame scenes in 3D models.

The pixel is, in essence, a digital building block, so that it translates so well into the pysical realm is no real surprise.

By stacking these pixel blocks, Tibori create sprites, in much the same way that an 8-bit artist builds up a character design by filling in squares on maths paper. The group then use the technique to create dioramas of recognisable game scenes.

I’d like to see a toy maker release packs of pixel blocks with which children (and old gamers) could build their own sprites with. You could buy themed sets (e.g. one for Link, one for Mario) and then combine the different coloured blocks to design your own 2D/3D characters, in a similar way that Lego encourages creativity after you’ve built the initial design it came with.

Tibori publish photographs of their creations on the blog Dotter Dotter. Sadly, they are not for sale.
